Why Western Red Cedar

Western Red Cedar has been our core imported species since the early 2000s, and there is a reason it keeps its place. It is one of the lightest commercial softwoods, which makes it faster and safer to install overhead or at height. It has a very low shrinkage rate, so it stays where you put it. And it carries natural oils that resist decay and insect attack without any chemical treatment, which is why cedar shingles on a hundred year old roof are still doing their job.

It also takes a finish better than most timbers. The open, even grain accepts penetrating oils and lacquers without blotching, and the colour range from pale straw through to deep reddish brown means it suits both warm and restrained palettes. Left uncoated it silvers off to a soft grey, which some projects want deliberately.

We import from certified Canadian and American forests and machine everything at our Brisbane facility. Our Western Red Cedar is PEFC certified, and we have been working with it long enough to know which grades suit which application and where it is worth spending the extra.

Grades and Sizes

Cedar grading runs on appearance. Clear grades carry little or no knot and suit interior linings, sauna work and anywhere the timber is the feature. Knotty grades carry visible knots and are specified where a more rustic facade is wanted, often at a considerable saving. Which grade is right depends on the application and how close anyone will stand to it, so tell us what the timber is for and we will steer you.

We hold cedar in cladding, weatherboard, panelling, lining, moulding, decking and sauna profiles, and we machine custom profiles to order. If what you need is not in the standard range, send us a drawing or a sample of the profile you are matching.

Cedar Timber FAQs

Yes. Western Red Cedar carries natural oils that resist decay and insect attack, so it performs outside without chemical treatment. It is widely used for cladding, weatherboards, decking, screening and outdoor joinery.

Not for decay resistance, which it has naturally. A finish is still worth applying if you want to hold the original colour, because uncoated cedar silvers off to grey over time. If the grey look is what you are after, leaving it bare is a legitimate choice.
