Custom Moulding Profiles
Most moulding work that comes to us is matching rather than choosing. A heritage renovation needs an architrave that matches the three rooms already done. A commercial fitout needs a trim detail that exists in the architect’s drawing and nowhere else. We machine both, from a drawing or from a physical offcut you send us.
Our standard range covers architraves, skirting, dowel, quad and scotia, beads, cover strips and glazing beads. Beyond that, if it can be run through a moulder we can make it. There is a minimum run length, so it is worth talking to us early in a project rather than once the rest of the carpentry is finished.
How many fixings a board needs comes down to its width. A board under 90 mm wide that is held on its edge by a tongue and groove will generally take a single nail at each support. Between 90 and 135 mm you need either an adhesive or a second fastener. Above 135 mm, extra nails are required and secret nailing stops being realistic, so plan for an expressed or filled face fixing from the start.
Species for Timber Mouldings
Western Red Cedar is the most forgiving moulding timber we run. It machines cleanly, holds a crisp arris and is light enough to fix overhead without a second pair of hands. For paint grade work it is hard to beat.
Where the moulding is going to be stained or left natural, species choice becomes a design decision. American White Oak and European Oak suit contemporary joinery matched interiors. Spotted Gum and Coastal Blackbutt bring warmth and a harder wearing edge for high traffic areas. Walnut and Douglas Fir are available to order for specific matches.
Mouldings can be supplied raw, sanded, or factory coated in our colourWOOD range. Pre-finishing is worth considering on a large run, because coating a thousand metres of architrave on site is slow work and the finish is never as even.
